THE BUDGET
The district proposes a $6,317,137 budget for 2017-18, a 0.72 percent increase from the current $6,272,107. The tax levy will not change from the current $5,082,291.
Rather than increase the levy, a minor increase of $45,030 will be offset by an increase in state aid and local revenue from adult education, the sale of surplus equipment, and decrease in health-insurance contributions due to a retirement, according to a district official.
The tax levy is within the district’s tax-cap limit of 2.76 percent, so a simple majority will be required to approve the budget.
The tax rate would stay the same as the current year: $22.96 per $100 assessed value in Brookhaven and $1.71 per $100 assessed value in Islip, according to the district.
There is a freeze in place on contract increases, and teachers are scheduled for a variable step increase.
The proposed budget does not call for any cuts in services and introduces a full-day prekindergarten pilot program.

Incumbents Vernon Henriksen and Judi Phelan are running unopposed for two at-large seats. Terms are three years.
