These are the replies from some districts to the Newsday questionnaire regarding the use of new technologies in their classrooms.

Some of the answers are elaborate, and have not been edited or reduced. Some districts did not answer the questions directly.

In their schools: Smart Table – an interactive education table with a hands-on approach for children PreK-grade 2 used to interact with one another in educational activities Computer response pads - “clickers” that allow for immediate student feedback Moodle (similar to Blackboard using in Higher Education) used in grade 3-12 classrooms which to allow for on-line discussions of content and sharing of photos and documents by students and teachers Brand new TV studio in Middle School and PreK-2 building – already existing at the high school, the TV studios are used for student broadcasts, demonstrating their understanding of content in all curricula areas.

Ex: Creating Public Service Announcements in high school social studies classes Brand new CAD Computer Lab in High School – creation of architectural drawing designs using AutoCAD Brand new Internet Radio Station in High School – a student run radio station including music and talk show programming Midi synthesizers in Middle School Music – creation of original music in middle school general music classes More than 150 SmartBoards and projectors districtwide – used by teachers to make content more visual and interactive for students Mini touch screen PCs – used K-5 to research and create documents and presentations in all content areas Digital document cameras – used to display items to students in 3D and to record science lab steps and experiments for future review.

Two digital language labs in Middle and High Schools – used to study and practice listening, speaking, reading and writing of foreign languages in middle and high school. Live streaming of district events – all districts events are streamed live over the Internet for friends and family who cannot otherwise attend (example: concerts) Digital still and video cameras integrated into classroom work – example: “Getting to Know You” activity in the beginning of the school year grades 3-6.

Students interview a partner, photograph them and annotate the photograph answering the question, “What do you want others to know about you?” Also, English Language learners use video as a way to learn and improve their English language skills. Worldwide videoconferencing including Antarctica, China, New Zealand and Brazil using Elluminate – students are using Elluminate to communicate with other students around the world Digital photography “lab” – students use digital cameras and Photoshop to create their own digital photographs Access to more than 50 databases from the school library and home.

In addition, the district this year launched Discovery Cove, grades preK-2 – An innovative learning space that incorporates 21st Century and traditional learning tools which promote inquiry, innovation and creativity. Launched on September 28th, this space includes SmartBoards, SmartTable, a document camera, TV studio using TriCaster, mini-PCs, puppet theater, tree house, lego table, blocks, digital cameras, Chalkboard wall, stage, touch screen computers, and books.

Math, science, special education and library media specialists at Finley Middle School are using Flip cameras, iMovie, Garageband and MSOffice Suite to address NYS performance indicators where students have shown needed improvement.
