Human Rights Week in Hauppauge

Human Rights Week in Hauppauge

Hauppauge High School held a week-long program in honor of Human Rights Week to bring increased awareness of the importance of respect and acceptance of diversity. Students from grades 9-12 attended lectures, discussions, exhibits and cultural arts presentations. Some of the activities throughout the week included:

Suffolk County Police Officers Nancy Ward and Antoinette Semetsis presented PoliceSmart, a comprehensive program that provided valuable information on sexting, bullying, internet safety and sound decision making.

Holocaust survivor, Werner Reich, provided students with a chilling account of his experience living in a concentration camp in Auschwitz.

Representatives from the Long Island Multi-Faith Forum spoke with students about different religious traditions and cultures. Displays and demonstrations were available representing eleven different faiths.

The high school’s acting ensemble and advanced acting ensemble held a performance to increase awareness of tolerance and respect.

A rare black and white photographic art exhibit was held on the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.

“Human Rights Week provides us with an opportunity to introduce our students to basic human rights,” stated Assistant Principal George Gagliardi. “As productive members of society, we would like our students to demonstrate leadership and courage in respecting each other’s differences.”
