Students at Woodhull Intermediate School in Huntington will soon see relief from overcrowded classrooms. The school board Monday night approved a contract to lease and install four modular classrooms on the campus.
In April, the board voted to transfer money from the district's reserve funds to lease three modulars to house an anticipated increase in students this fall. The school, which housed grades 4-6 last year, was at capacity, officials said, before the board voted in July to close the Jack Abrams School to students and send all fifth- and sixth-graders to Woodhull. Fourth-graders are attending district primary schools this year.
The approved contract calls for four modular classrooms to be provided by New Jersey-based modular buildings provider, M Space. Details were not immediately available for the cost of the approved bid.
Last month the board voted to reject all bids it received for the capital project because the combined low bids were more than twice what had been anticipated. The lowest of the bids the board had considered last month for lease and installation of three modulars, with plumbing and electric installation, cost around $560,000.
The modulars are expected to be in place by the end of January.
