Miller Place school shows wrong puberty video, officials say
Administrators at the Miller Place School District said on Thursday that the district accidentally showed fifth-grade girls “a video focusing on puberty and body changes” that was actually intended for male and female seventh-graders.
Superintendent Marianne Higuera said in a letter to parents that the video “was not a sexual education video.”
The district explained that it annually shows fifth grade boys a video concerning puberty and body changes specific to boys. Girls see their own video specific to the female body.
“During this year’s annual routine presentation, one group of female students was accidentally shown a video focusing on puberty and body changes intended for both male and female seventh grade students,” the superintendent said.
The district emailed all fifth grade parents to alert them to the situation, she added. School officials also called the parents of the select female students who saw the video.
“The district is taking the necessary actions to ensure this technical difficulty never occurs again,” Higuera said.
