Mineola school district
VOTING
6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson Avenue School and Meadow Drive School.
THE BUDGET
The district proposes a $91,214,512 budget for 2016-17, a 1.73 percent increase from the current $89,664,263. The tax levy would decrease by 0.013 percent, from $78,853,503 to $78,843,160.
The district said its tax-cap limit is -0.012 percent and that the levy decrease is equal to its cap limit. Asked about the mathematical discrepancy, district officials reiterated that the levy decrease and the tax-cap limit are the same percentage.
This levy decrease is beneath the district’s -0.012 percent tax cap, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget.
School taxes on the average single-family home would increase by 0.39 percent, from $6,630 to $6,656.
The district is currently in negotiations with its teachers over salaries. The proposed budget does not include any changes in programs, services or additional staffing.
