Port Jefferson school district
VOTING
6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.
THE BUDGET
The district proposes a $41,400,492 budget for 2016-17, a 2.35 percent decrease from the current $42,397,368. The tax levy would increase by 0.47 percent, from $34,644,427 to $34,807,214.
The increase is equal to the district’s tax-cap limit, so just a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget. The district says that an estimate of the taxes the owner of an average single-family home would pay is not available.
The proposed budget funds a contractual increase of 1 percent and 0.5 percent average step increase for teachers. It includes adding 1.9 full-time equivalent teaching positions, and does not call for any cuts in programs or services, mostly due to increases in state aid.
