Sewanhaka school district
VOTING
In the four component elementary school districts on Tuesday, in designated district polling locations: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Elmont; 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Floral Park-Bellerose; 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Franklin Square; and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in New Hyde Park-Garden City Park.
THE BUDGET
The district proposes a budget of $184,143,004 for 2016-17, a 2.98 percent increase over the current $178,806,581. The tax levy would rise by 0.4 percent, from $135,665,613 to $136,213,244.
This increase is equal to the district’s tax-cap limit, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget.
School taxes on the average single-family home would increase by 0.41 percent, from $3,326.05 to $3,339.85.
The district did not supply figures for contractual raises or step increases for teachers in response to Newsday’s request. The proposed budget would fund student programs and help improve student-to-counselor ratios. It also would add two guidance counselors and eight teachers that had been cut in prior years, and would pay for renovations and technology improvements for students and staff.
