Shelter Island school district
VOTING
Noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Shelter Island School.
THE BUDGET
The district proposes a $10,966,854 budget for 2016-17, a 0.22 decrease over the current $10,990,967.
The tax levy amount would rise by 5.92 percent, from $9,441,689 to $10,000,816.
This increase exceeds the district’s tax-cap limit of 2.17 percent, so the district would need at least 60 percent voter approval of the budget.
School taxes on the average single-family home would rise by 5.01 percent, from $2,475 to $2,599.
The district is negotiating with the teachers union. Under the proposed budget, a physical education position would be reduced to half-time, and several physical education classes will be larger. In addition, a pre-K teacher would be added to staff the new full-day prekindergarten program; to accommodate that move, a teacher’s aide position would be removed.
