VOTING

7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Tuckahoe School Library.

THE BUDGET

The district proposes a $19,533,000 budget for 2016-17, a 2.3 percent increase from the current $19,095,393. The tax levy would increase by 2.48 percent, from $17,451,407 to $17,884,077.

This increase exceeds the district’s tax-cap limit of 0.38 percent, so the district would need at least 60 percent voter approval of the budget.

Taxes on the average single-family home would increase by 2.19 percent, from $7,196.19 to $7,353.73.

The district and the teachers union are negotiating a new contract. The proposed budget would fund an additional security guard, and a full-time accounting clerk to replace a half-time position. The district’s summer-school program would be cut.

A proposition asks voters to authorize a contract with the Southampton school district for education of students in grades 9-12 through the 2020-21 school year. Voters also will decide whether to authorize spending $54,386 for the district’s participation in the Southampton Youth Association. Another proposition asks voters to decide whether to spend $7,868 for the district’s participation in the Parrish Art Museum.
