Long Island will see several days of mostly dry late-summer weather after a weekend forecasters said dumped between 1 and 2 inches of much-needed rain across much of Nassau and western Suffolk counties.

Farther east, the accumulation was less than an inch, according to Bill Goodman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

"It weakened as it moved east because of the moderating effect of the ocean," Goodman said.

While Long Island has avoided the drought conditions affecting parts of New England and the Appalachians, Goodman said, the area has received below-average rainfall in the past month or so.

"There’s still a deficit," he said Sunday. "Yesterday’s rainfall was a step in the right direction."

Long Island weekend rain will be replaced Monday by mostly sunny skies and a high of 73 degrees, dropping to an evening low of 55, the weather service said.

Tuesday will bring much of the same: sunny skies and a high in the mid-70s and an evening low of 57. Some clouds will roll in Wednesday with a 30% chance of showers. The high Wednesday will top out at 71. Thursday and Friday will be sunny with a highs of about 79 and 73 respectively.

Evening lows both days will dip to about 57, according to the weather service.
