Five ways you could pay more under Gov. David A. Paterson's proposed state budget.
PROPERTY TAXES. $1.1 billion less in school aid, and the elimination the STAR tax exemption for homes valued at $1.5 million or more, which could lead to higher local property taxes.
SODA. A new tax on beverage syrups and soft drinks; about a penny an ounce.
CIGARETTES. A $1 per pack increase in the cigarette excise tax.
TUITION. $201 million less to SUNY, community colleges and tuition assistance, which could lead to higher college costs for some.
HEALTH CARE. $240 million in surcharges on health care providers, which could be passed on to patients.
