Maria Ryan of Laurel Hollow received the Victress Award in Health from Victress Initiative, a nonprofit that aims to increase the percentage of women in leadership positions. Ryan, who was honored for "her work in advancing women's health care," is a professor of oral biology and pathology at Stony Brook University's School of Dental Medicine. She is also exploring development of early diagnostic tests to be used to identify periodontal disease in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
