Body discovered near tracks at Wantagh LIRR station by train conductor
An unidentified male's body was found underneath a platform at the Long Island Rail Road station in Wantagh Sunday morning, an MTA official said.
MTA Long Island Rail Road spokesman Salvatore Arena said the body was discovered about 7:30 a.m. between the track and the south side train platform.
Arena said a crew member on the Babylon bound train, which left Penn Station in Manhattan at 6:25 a.m., spotted the body when it made a stop in Wantagh.
The crew member called MTA police. The Nassau County medical examiner also responded to the scene about 9:15 a.m., Arena said.
"The body was not on the tracks but off to the side," Arena said.
Arena said the train was taken out of service and the passengers transferred to the next train to Babylon. He added service was canceled for the westbound 8:09 a.m. train from Babylon that was due at Penn Station at 9:12 a.m.
The investigation was continuing and no further details were immediately available.
