Cop helps deliver baby in hospital elevator, Nassau police say

A Nassau County police officer helped deliver a “healthy baby boy” in an elevator at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, authorities said Saturday.

The officer pulled over a vehicle about 5 p.m. Friday and was told there was an expectant mother inside, according to a Nassau police news release.

The officer then escorted the vehicle to the hospital to ensure the mother’s safe arrival and placed her in a wheelchair and took her to the emergency room, police said.

A hospital staff member was assigned to escort the officer and mother to the maternity ward, and while in the elevator the mother went into labor.

The officer “helped the mother deliver a healthy baby boy,” police said, and after the officer carried the baby to the hospital staff who took over his medical care.

“At this time mother and son are doing well,” the release added, but no other information, including the age of the mother and where she lives, was immediately available.
