Cops: Man compromised accounts of Bank of America customers

A 26-year-old Uniondale man who performed unauthorized online bank transfers to steal more than $180,000 was arrested Tuesday and charged with identity theft, grand larceny and fraud, police said.

Nassau County police said David Smith of Macon Place, acting “in concert with unidentified others, previously or not yet arrested,” compromised the accounts of multiple Bank of America customers — then performed on-line transfers from those accounts into accounts over which he and the other suspects had control.

The time period over which the violations took place was not immediately clear Wednesday. It also was not immediately clear how Smith gained access to those bank accounts.

Police said Smith was charged with two counts each of first-degree identity theft and third-degree grand larceny, as well as one count of first-degree scheming to defraud.

He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court, Hempstead.
