A Queens man was arrested during a traffic stop in Hempstead on Wednesday morning after Nassau police noticed a handgun inside his car.

Police said officers from the Bureau of Special Operations pulled over Derrick Nettles, 21, on northbound Bennett Avenue at 7:20 a.m. Nettles was asked to show his license, and as he opened the center console of his car to get out his paperwork, officers saw a silver handgun inside, police said.

Nettles was taken out of the car and placed into custody, police said. An unlicensed loaded 9-mm handgun was recovered by police from the center console.

Nettles, of 120-12 201st St. in St. Albans, is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
