LI doctor at JFK Airport clinic falsely certified commercial drivers' fitness, prosecutors say

A Long Island doctor was charged in Brooklyn federal court Tuesday with fraudulently certifying the physical fitness of applicants for commercial driver's licenses to operate heavy vehicles.
Dr. Gerald Surya, 45, of New Hyde Park, is accused of approving examinations that were conducted by staffers with "little or no medical training" whom he worked with at JFK Medport, a 24-hour clinic at Kennedy Airport.
"Dr. Surya's conduct put at risk pedestrians as well as other drivers," said Acting Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Kelly Currie. Surya faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
