The Glen Cove City Council recently honored the Glen Cove winner of a Miss El Salvador contest for Long Island.

“I feel very proud to be able to represent El Salvador and also the city of Glen Cove,” Solania Villatoro said in Spanish after Mayor Reginald Spinello presented her with a certificate from the city at the Oct. 25 council meeting. She was wearing her crown and “Miss El Salvador” sash.

Villatoro, 24, was named Miss El Salvador in a Sept. 23 contest in Uniondale held by the Uniondale-based Salvadoran Civic Committee, said Ever Padilla, a committee member. The committee is separate from an organization of the same name that is based in Hempstead. She marched in the Oct. 9 National Hispanic Day parade in Manhattan, he said.

Padilla said it’s significant to have the city recognize the achievements of its Latino residents.

Nearly a third of the city’s population is Latino, according to 2010-14 U.S. Census Bureau estimates. More than half of Latinos – and nearly 16 percent of Glen Cove’s entire population – are Salvadoran.
