A segment of a major thoroughfare in Hempstead Village, North Franklin Street, has been reopened for traffic after being closed about midnight Saturday when a storm drain ruptured, village police said.

Hempstead police originally said the road might remain closed until Monday night, but on Monday morning said it had been reopened to traffic.

The break came during a winter storm that brought snow across the Island all day Saturday and then turned to rain.

The restricted area had run from Atlantic Avenue on the north to West Columbia Street on the south, Hempstead police Lt. Francis McNamee said Sunday.
