Uniondale man guilty in murder of former roommate

A judge Tuesday found a man guilty of murdering a former roommate after a dispute about money sparked a Uniondale shooting, authorities said.

State Supreme Court Justice George Peck convicted Jonathan Mack, 20, of Uniondale, of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon after a bench trial, the Nassau County district attorney's office said.

Assistant District Attorney Daryl Levy said during the trial that Mack was arguing with a woman about money when victim Isaac Andrews, the woman's fiance, decided to step in. He said Mack then raised a gun and fired at least four times. The June 2013 shooting happened near a church as services were going on.

Four bullets hit Andrews, 34, of Uniondale, including one in his back, and he later was pronounced dead at a hospital, prosecutors said. Police arrested Mack in Florida about a month later after a Crime Stoppers tip saying he'd been hiding in his brother's apartment.

Defense attorney Brian Carmody said during the trial that the victim's death wasn't an intentional murder, and Mack was acting in self-defense. He declined to comment Tuesday.

Mack faces 25 years to life in prison on the murder conviction and is due in court for sentencing in October.
