Mario Morales, 19, left, and William Nieto, 17, both of Hempstead, were each charged with second-degree attempted burglary after a detective spotted them trying to break into a Garden City home on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, Nassau County police said.

A detective assigned to burglary patrol hit pay dirt early Tuesday in Garden City, when he spotted two males trying to break into a home -- leading to their arrests on burglary charges.

Mario Morales, 19, of 380 Front St., and William Nieto, 17, of 142 Henry St., both in Hempstead, were each charged with second-degree attempted burglary, Nassau County police said.

Both face arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said that arrests were made by Garden City police at 2:45 a.m. at a home on Locust Street -- after the detective spotted the break-in attempt.

The Garden City police detective, assigned to burglary patrol, spotted the pair on Clinton Road and followed them as they turned onto Locust, where he watched as they "tried to gain entry through a window."

Additional units were called to the scene -- and the would-be burglars were arrested, police said.
