The cost to park in Port Washington’s commuter lots per day will double next week, the result of fee hikes approved by the North Hempstead Town Board.

The daily rate would increase to $2 from $1, part of an effort to encourage more motorists to buy the town’s $240 annual parking permit.

Street meters would cost motorists 25 cents per half hour, rather than 25 cents per hour.

The town board, which approved the legislation in a 7-0 vote on April 19, fielded complaints from residents who worried the fees would be prohibitive to motorists and to the shoppers who pay for street parking.

The new law also limits families to three cars per household for use of the lot, as a way to encourage carpooling. While the previous law allowed a household to register an unlimited number of cars at $15 each, the new law sets up a steep fee scale: $25 for the first car, $45 for the second, and $150 for the third.
