Brooklyn man charged with stealing $12,000 from Wells Fargo banks in Nassau, police say

A Brooklyn man was charged Monday with forgery and identity theft after he allegedly stole $12,000 from bank accounts throughout Nassau County, police said.
Nassau detectives said Steven Colon, 53, of 280 Marion St. went to a Wells Fargo Bank Monday afternoon at 145 Fulton Ave. in Hempstead and claimed he needed a replacement for a lost debit card.
Police said Colon showed a teller a fraudulent Virginia driver's license and a Capital One MasterCard with the name of a Wells Fargo account holder. The bank gave him a temporary debit card when he left shortly after 4:30 p.m.
Colon was spotted at a Herricks Wells Fargo at 2499 Jericho Tpke. where he asked to withdraw $8,000. A bank employee recognized Colon from a fraud warning notice and called police, authorities said.
Police said Colon started acting nervous and tried to leave the bank, but was immediately stopped by officers. An investigation showed that Colon had stolen $12,000 from various Wells Fargo accounts last month using stolen identities and personal information, detectives said.
He was charged with second-degree forgery, two counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument, first-degree identity theft, two counts of grand larceny in the third degree and three counts of fourth-degree grand larceny.
Colon is set to be arraigned Tuesday morning in First District Court in Hempstead.
