A 19-year-old West Hempstead man was charged with drunken driving and second-degree vehicular assault after he flipped his car in a late-night crash Wednesday in Hempstead and he and two passengers were ejected from the vehicle, police said.
Camilo Araya of 185 Fairlawn Ave. and a 23-year-old passenger, whose identity was not released, were seriously injured in the crash on southbound Peninsula Boulevard, Nassau County police said. A rear-seat passenger also ended up outside the vehicle, police said, but was not seriously injured.
A 27-year-old woman driving a car struck by Araya suffered neck and back injuries in the crash, police said.
Police said Araya, driving a 2001 Mitsubishi, crashed into a 2009 Mitsubishi at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, then struck a utility pole -- and flipped.
Araya and one passenger were taken, both unconscious, to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola with what police called "serious physical injuries." Their conditions were not known, though police said both remain hospitalized.
Araya faces arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead "as soon as medically practical," police said.
The injured female driver was treated and released. The second passenger from Araya's car was not hospitalized.
