Teens charged in New Cassel assault
Two teenagers face assault charges after one of them used a broken bottle Wednesday to slash an employee of a New Cassel store in the face, head and hand, Nassau County police said.
The two male teens, ages 13 and 15, were in the KB Department Store at 701 Prospect Ave. at about 3 p.m. and were seen by employees shoplifting, according to a news release.
The 13-year-old was seen trying to conceal electronics merchandise and the 15-year-old took about $8 worth of hair-care products, the release said.
As they ran out of the store, the 13-year-old was startled by an employee and dropped a cellphone, police said.
The two returned to the store about three hours later, looking for the cellphone, police said. They confronted another store employee, a man, and the 13-year-old broke a glass bottle and chased the employee outside the store, police said.
The injured employee "sustained serious injuries to his face, head and right hand and was transported by police ambulance to a local area hospital," police said in the release. There was no update on his injuries.
The two teens were arrested and are scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
The 13-year-old is charged with first-degree assault, petty larceny and criminal possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to appear in Family Court, police said.
The 15-year-old is charged with first-degree assault and is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead.
