Road closures, tight security expected during Trump's visit to Nassau County

Nassau County residents in parts of Uniondale, Garden City, East Meadow, Mineola and Hempstead should expect road closures Friday afternoon during a visit by President Donald Trump.

A select number of public tickets will also be available for the president's visit, described as a forum on public safety with Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican running for governor.

Blakeman announced plans for the visit Thursday, standing before a line of police officers. He said the area will be heavily fortified by police and the U.S. Secret Service.

Blakeman said Trump would be touring the county's David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence and the Bolla police training village on the campus of Nassau Community College.

"He'll be addressing public safety issues, and I will be addressing public safety issues," Blakeman said. "I think he's excited to come and see our facilities."

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the area has been surveyed by the Secret Service. Police resources, including aviation, K-9 units and SWAT teams, will secure the area.

Police did not detail road closures, citing security concerns, but said residents should avoid the area if they can.

An unspecified number of residents will be given tickets through Nassau County's website and the Secret Service to visit the training center to hear Trump speak.

Visitors will enter off Stewart Avenue and go through security screenings. They are urged not to bring bags.

The area is expected to be locked down from 1 to 5 p.m.

"You've got to understand that the area is a hot zone," Ryder said. "We have a lot of road closures that are going to come. If you're going to the event and you are ticketed to go to that event, that means you've been prior-approved to be there."

Several groups are planning to protest the president's visit.

A protest area will be cordoned off at Endo Boulevard and Perimeter Road, about a half mile from the training center.

Nassau Community College will be closed Friday but open for visitor parking.
