A Bridgeport, Conn.-based bank announced Wednesday that it will donate funds to help cover funeral expenses for the 9-year-old girl fatally hit by an SUV last week.
People's United Bank will donate $3,000 to cover Jackeline Vilorio's funeral, according to a release issued by the company Wednesday.
"This is a tragedy beyond comparison for the Vilorio family, the Rocky Point community and something that resonates with every town in Long Island," said Long Island Division president John Romano in a statement. "To lose a child is something that no parent, family or community is ever prepared for, and although this donation won't bring Jackeline back, People's United hopes it will help reduce the family's stress during this difficult time."
Vilorio, a third-grader at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in Rocky Point, died Sunday, Suffolk police said, after she was struck Friday evening by a 1990 Jeep at the intersection of Madison and Roosevelt streets in Rocky Point. She was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Medical Center Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The school district's PTA set up an account in Jackeline's name for the family with People's United Back in Rocky Point being one of the two designated drop off locations for those wishing to donate funds to the family. The school district will also take checks, which can be made out to Friends of Jackeline Vilorio.
Thursday will be the second day of viewing, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rocky Point Funeral Home, 603 Route 25A in Rocky Point. Funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 614 Route 25A followed by a burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.
