Whoever left 18 beheaded chickens that were found on a Manorville street on Friday night likely left them there between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said.

The chickens were found strewn on South Street and Weeks Avenue -- some on the road, and some further away from it, Gross said.

The bodies were missing their heads, but were otherwise intact with no other signs of trauma, he said. They appeared freshly killed.

And they weren't used for cockfighting, Gross said.

"They were not the type of birds that would be used for that purpose," he said. "They were regular chickens."

Gross said he's asking anyone who might have information about this ongoing investigation to contact his agency at 631-382-7722.

"We're hoping somebody between 7 and 8:30 saw something there, saw a vehicle stopping there," Gross said. "If they could call, we would appreciate that."
