Boil water alert issued for Ocean Bay Park, Point O' Woods

A boil water alert was issued Saturday for two Fire Island communities after E. coli bacteria was found in test samples.

Residents of Ocean Bay Park and Point O' Woods have been advised by the Suffolk County Water Authority to boil their drinking water or use bottled water.

The authority said the bacteria was found in water supply samples collected at Ocean Bay Park.

"Our primary concern is the health and safety of our customers. In cooperation with the Suffolk County Department of Health, we will resolve this situation as quickly as possible," Jeffrey Szabo, the authority's chief executive, said in a statement.

Officials said the alert does not apply to communities east of Point O' Woods and west of Ocean Bay Park. Authority officials said affected customers have been contacted via automated phone calls.

The authority has opened its Traffic Walk Pump Station to offer customers bottled water. That station is at the south end of Cayuga Street in Ocean Bay Park.
