Bones found in a wooded area of Yaphank this week are not human, Suffolk County police said Thursday.

The bones were found Wednesday in an area off Gerard Road near Patchogue-Yaphank Road, police said. A forensics expert had been called in to determine the nature of the remains. Police said Thursday they belonged to an animal.

The hamlet of Yaphank is less than 10 miles from Manorville, where Suffolk detectives have unresolved investigations into six instances of human remains discovered since November 2000.
