Cops: Dix Hills mom charged with driving drunk with child, 2
Police arrested a Dix Hills mother Friday morning on Leandra's Law charges after they got a 911 tip that a woman was driving drunk with her child, Suffolk County police said.
Ellisha Haynes, 35, was driving north on Carlls Straight Path in Dix Hills and made a right turn onto Corwin Court at about 12:35 a.m., where she was pulled over, police said.
A 911 call had alerted police that Haynes, of 3 Grayon Dr., was intoxicated and driving with her 2-year-old child, police said.
After a brief interview, police determined that Haynes was drunk, a police report said. She was held overnight and the child was released to the father, police said.
Haynes is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a passenger younger than 16, driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child. She was scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Under Leandra's Law, passed in November, the endangerment charge is a felony. The law was passed following the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in an alleged DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed on the West Side Highway.
