The driver of an out-of-control sport utility vehicle that crashed into a 7-Eleven in Mastic early Tuesday evening had been shot before the crash, Suffolk police said.

Police said the driver, whose identity has not been released, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital and was listed in stable condition Wednesday. He was expected to survive, police said.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting and crash remain under investigation, according to police, who did not release details of the shooting.

Police said the SUV was headed west on Montauk Highway when it crashed into the front doors of the 7-Eleven. No one in the store was injured, police said. The crash occurred at 7:26 p.m.
