Police are investigating the circumstances leading to a single-car accident that left a 46-year-old man dead in West Islip Wednesday night.

James Clark of West Islip was killed when he lost control of his 1997 Honda as it traveled eastbound on the Sunrise Highway service road -- crashing into a tree just off the shoulder of the road near the intersection of Udall Road, Suffolk County police said in a Thursday morning news release.

The crash occurred at 7:30 p.m. and police said Clark died at the crash scene.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
