Death of boy, 11, in East Hampton probed as drowning
The death of an 11-year-old Brooklyn boy pulled from a residential pool is being investigated as a drowning, East Hampton Town Police said Tuesday.
The boy, Derek B. Smith, was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon at Southampton Hospital, police said.
He and a family member were guests at a house at Route 114 in East Hampton where police responded to an emergency call at 5:08 p.m., said Det. Sgt. Greg Schaefer.
Officers and ambulance personnel arriving on the scene found the boy unresponsive, after having been pulled from the pool, police said.
Police Tuesday said an autopsy is scheduled by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner but Smith's death "does not appear to be suspicious in nature and no foul play is suspected."
Police are asking anyone with information to call investigators at 631-537-7575.
