Southampton Town Police are awaiting results from the Suffolk County medical examiner's office before identifying two victims in a single-car crash Saturday in Sag Harbor, a police spokesman said Monday.

"Due to the nature of the crash and resulting fire, the identification process is not as immediate as normally experienced," Det. Sgt Randy Hintze said in an email to media outlets.

Hintze said in the email that once police get the results and the families have been notified, the identities of the victims will be made public.

The two were killed after their 2006 Mustang struck a tree and burst into flames on Brick Kiln Road at about 3:34 p.m., police said.

The impact caused the car to ignite and become engulfed in flames, which were extinguished by the Sag Harbor Fire Department.

The two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Police ask anyone with more information to call the Southampton Town Police Detective Division, 631-728-5000, or the Police Information Hotline, 631-728-3454.
