A 61-year-old man was seriously injured Sunday, July 12, 2015, in Oakdale after his vehicle hit the back end of a Chevrolet Impala on Montauk Highway and slammed into two trees, Suffolk police said. Credit: Christopher Sabella

A 61-year-old man was seriously injured Sunday night in Oakdale after his vehicle struck the back end of a Chevrolet Impala on Montauk Highway and slammed into two trees, Suffolk police said.

Denis Mcauliffe of Oakdale, was heading east on Montauk Highway at about 8:30 p.m. when his 2004 Lincoln hit the rear of the Impala also traveling eastbound, police said.

Mcauliffe was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. No updates on his condition were available early Monday.

The driver of the 2000 Impala, Steven Hawrylynko, 20, also of Oakdale, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

Detectives from Suffolk's Fifth Squad were investigating the crash.
