East Islip schools mull teacher layoffs
The East Islip school district has notified 23 teachers that they face potential layoffs next year, while stressing that no final decision has been reached.
"The Board of Education is continuing to explore all options," the district said in a prepared statement Monday.
Those options include possible contract concessions.
Tom Barry, president of the local teachers' union, said he had discussed the issue recently with district officials.
"I'm hoping that talks continue," he said.
Last year, the union agreed to an 18-month freeze in contractual raises, along with delayed payment of "step" increases built into the district's salary schedule.
East Islip now faces new financial pressures, due to a $2.8-million cut in next year's state aid, adopted last week by Albany lawmakers and expected to be signed into law Monday by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.
