The Farmingville man who died in a motorcycle crash last month in Mattituck was an FDNY firefighter who had been honored for heroism, his sister said Friday.

Michael D. Lourine, 33, followed in his father's footsteps and "was never shy about his desire to emulate" his father's bravery in the line of duty, said Deborah Shane, 37, of Bergen Beach, Brooklyn.

Lourine was one of six members of Ladder Company 105 who were honored in 2007 for their teamwork in responding to a Dec. 17, 2005 fire at a home for mentally disabled adults.

The group received the Firefighter Thomas R. Elsasser Memorial Medal for their efforts in rescuing four people, according to an FDNY publication.

Lourine died on Sept. 8 after the 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle he was riding struck a curb and he was ejected, striking his head on a utility pole, Southold Town police said.

The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near the intersection of Route 25 and Love Lane, police said.

A funeral Mass was held Sept. 13 at St. Mary's Church in East Islip, followed by cremation.
