A Hampton Bays man was arrested and charged with stealing $100,000 worth of jewelry from a safe in a Hampton Bays home, police said.

Nicholas Spiegal, 24, was ordered held in the Suffolk County Jail on $10,000 bail following his arraignment Monday in Southampton Justice Court.

Southampton Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said Southampton Town police were called to a home on Westerly Road about 6 p.m. Sunday where a large amount of assorted valuable jewelry was stolen from a safe that wasn't properly secured.

Costa said Spiegal, who is unemployed, stole the jewelry earlier in the day when he was visiting someone at the house.

He was arrested Sunday night and charged with second degree grand larceny, a class C felony, punishable upon conviction by up to 15 years imprisonment.

Spiegal's next court appearance is Thursday, authorities said.

Southampton police said only about $7,000 to $8,000 of the $100,000 worth of jewelry was recovered, so investigators are still looking for the rest.

Detectives asked that anyone with information contact Southampton police at 631-728-5000, the Southampton police detective unit at 631-702-2230, or the Crime Hotline at 631-728-3454.
