Charges against a Huntington Station woman have been increased to second-degree murder for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend to death, but her attorney argued Friday at her arraignment that she shouldn't be charged at all.

Kutima Glover, 33, originally had been charged with first-degree manslaughter in the July 5 death of Larry Collins, 38. Police found him on the couple's front lawn with two stab wounds to the abdomen and one to the heart, Assistant District Attorney Laura Newcombe said in court.

She said Glover returned home, woke Collins and told him he needed to move out. An altercation resulted early that morning, Newcombe said, in which Glover had a knife between 6 and 8 inches long.

"They were wrestling around," she said. "The victim was trying to get the knife out of the defendant's hands."

But defense attorney Camille Russell of Westbury said Glover was the true victim.

"The facts of the case clearly, clearly establish that Miss Glover was under attack that morning," Russell said, adding that her client was "bruised and beaten" by Collins. Russell said Glover called 911 because she thought her life was in danger.

"She called for help," Russell said. "She wasn't looking to kill anybody. She called the police looking for help, and Mr. Collins knocked the phone out of her hand."

Russell said Glover told Collins to leave after he beat her, and instead he went outside and damaged her car. "Miss Glover really shouldn't be standing here, your honor," Russell said.

State Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro said the arraignment wasn't the place to try the case. He ordered Glover held without bail, but told Russell he would be open to a bail application later. Russell said Glover is the sole support for her two children: a girl, 13, and a boy, 10.
