Bail was set on Sunday for a Baiting Hollow man accused of fleeing after striking a woman with his car in Shirley.

At his arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip, John Almeida, 23, was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.

Almeida is accused of leaving the scene Thursday after hitting Marie Braccia, 54, with his 2002 Nissan Maxima.

Braccia was crossing Grand Avenue around 8 p.m. Thursday when she was struck. She was rushed to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, and later was transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition on Sunday, according to a hospital spokesman.

Suffolk police arrested Almeida around 9 p.m. Saturday and charged him with leaving the scene of an incident involving a serious physical injury and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
