Bail was set at $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond Sunday for a Medford man charged with drunken driving after Suffolk police said he swerved into oncoming traffic and seriously injured another motorist.

Juan Fanacio-Avila, 32, was driving a 2000 Audi northbound on Route 112 at Mount Vernon Avenue in Medford at 6:07 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle crossed into the southbound lane and struck a 1999 Subaru driven by Froylan Perez, 35, of Coram, police said.

Perez was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Fifth Squad detectives charged Fanacio-Avila, 32, with driving while intoxicated. His license was also suspended Sunday during his arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip.
