Man's condition 'fair' after blast
A Greenlawn man injured in an explosion at his home was upgraded today from serious to fair condition, said Stony Brook Medical Center.
William Wemyss, 21, was airlifted to the hospital after the 2:15 p.m. Saturday explosion at an Oldfield Road residence. When firefighters arrived, Wemyss was waiting in the driveway, with a severe injury to his hand, officials said.
No other injuries were reported, and firefighters said there was no blaze to extinguish. Suffolk police's arson unit is investigating what caused the explosion, but released no further details.
A man who answered the door at Wemyss' weathered, white colonial yesterday identified himself as the victim's uncle, and said his nephew was "in good spirits." He declined to give his name and declined to speak about what caused the explosion.
