A Selden man was arrested Friday after he attempted to rob a Patchogue store, then robbed a gas station minutes later, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Michael Ward, 48, of Selden, attempted to rob Main Street Wines and Liquors at about 8:15 p.m. He placed his hand in his sweatshirt pocket and demanded money from the cashier, but the employee pulled out a baseball bat and Ward fled, police said.

Then, police received a call from a gas station on Route 112 at about 8:20 p.m. Police said he again placed his hand in his sweatshirt pocket and demanded money from the employee, who complied. Ward fled in a white sport utility vehicle, police said.

Patrol officers found and arrested Ward a short time later. He was charged with third-degree attempted robbery and third-degree robbery and scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
