Piece of small plane in fatal Long Island Sound crash found on Rhode Island beach, officials say

A piece of the small plane that crashed in Long Island Sound several miles north of Mattituck Inlet last week has washed up on a Rhode Island beach, federal officials said.
Federal Aviation Administration officials said that the hatch or canopy of the downed plane piloted by Zubair Khan, 41, of Leroy Street in Greenwich Village, the sole occupant who died in the crash, showed up on Dunes Park Beach in Westerly Thursday night, according to media reports.
"We retrieved it and confirmed it as part of the aircraft that went into the waters off Mattituck last Monday," said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the FAA, adding that the piece, which covers the cockpit, was first found in the waters by the Coast Guard.
The plane is an experimental, amateur-built, fixed-wing Raven, powered by a Lycoming IO 540 SER engine.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
