The body of an unidentified man was discovered Monday in Long Island Sound waters, 5 miles north of Port Jefferson, Suffolk police said.

A pleasure boater in a sailboat discovered the body and notified the Suffolk marine bureau about 3 p.m., police said.

Homicide Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman said there is no apparent trauma to the body. "At this point, it doesn't appear to be foul play," Groneman said, but detectives will await a medical examiner's report for a determination as to the cause of death.

The body, which police don't believe was in the water a long of time, was described by police as a dark-skinned black man, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, 160 pounds, with thick black hair, a mustache and beard. There was no clothing on the body, police said.

Law enforcement authorities in Connecticut and on Long Island were notified, Groneman said. The body was discovered, "it looks like right in the middle of the Sound," Groneman said, and the currents could have carried the body from waters near either state.
