Homeless man arrested in Bayport burglary, police say

A homeless man who broke into a Bayport home Wednesday faces charges of burglary and resisting arrest, Suffolk County police said.

Police said a resident of a Middle Road home felt it was unsafe to answer a ringing doorbell and knocking at the front door at about 1:40 p.m.

The person at the door then broke a rear window and entered the home; the resident, who had been hiding inside, was able to leave by a back door when the suspect went upstairs, police said.

Fifth Precinct Officers Michael Coyne and Matthew Dematteo, along with Lt. Kenneth Fasano, located Edward Phillips a short distance from the home and arrested him after a brief struggle.

Phillips, 35, who police said is homeless, is charged with burglary and resisting arrest.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Central Islip. Arraignment information was not immediately available.
