An on-duty taxi driver died Sunday morning after he lost control of his taxi and ran into a utility pole in Bay Shore, Suffolk police said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Brentwood Road and New York Avenue. Leon Williams, 55, of Brentwood was driving a taxi for Tommy's Taxi at about 5:40 a.m. when police said he lost control of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala he was driving and hit the pole.

Williams was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead. He did not have any passengers in the cab at the time of the collision.

An employee who answered the phone at Tommy's Taxi in Bay Shore had no comment.

Police impounded the taxi for a safety check, and the investigation is ongoing.
