A 19-year-old Wyandanch man who was treated last week for a gunshot to the leg was arrested on Saturday for illegally possessing a handgun, Suffolk police said.
Chris Berry of North 22nd Street had been walking on South 27th Street on Wednesday evening when he suffered a bullet wound to his right leg.
He was taken by a friend to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, but police said he gave few details about the circumstances surrounding his injury or who was responsible for the shooting.
On Saturday, authorities executed a search warrant on Berry's home and found an unlicensed loaded .25 caliber handgun with its serial number defaced.
Berry was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday in First District Court in Central Islip.
Investigators are asking anyone with more information on this case to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS.
